June Rosenberry received her training at the School of Fine Arts at Ohio State University from 1968-1972 and has been making ceramic art ever since. She has sold her art at many different art shows and outlets.
The smallest piece she ever made on the potter’s wheel measured one quarter inch high by one quarter inch wide — about the size of a vitamin pill. The largest piece she ever made was seven feet high and about three feet wide.
June makes unique pieces, the most recent of which are wall art using a technique she invented and calls Ceramic Relief. Ceramic Relief is an artistic technique in which a painted image is repeated in clay. A full demonstration of the Ceramic Relief process can be found here. Examples of Ceramic Relief wall art can be found here.
The normal ceramic process consists of first preparing the clay, then making the form either on the potter’s wheel or by using slabs rolled out on a slab roller or a combination of both of these.
The form is then allowed to air dry, usually overnight. Once the form is partially dry it is ready to trim. Trimming excess clay can be done by hand or on the wheel. Then the form is decorated using extra clay or by carving into it. This makes a finished form. This is the greenware stage. The greenware must completely air dry for several days before it can be fired. If fired too soon, it will develop cracks or will break apart.
The first firing is called bisque firing. Bisque is fired to about 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Common red flower pots are bisque fired.
Glaze is then applied to the bisque piece.
It is then fired a second time, the glaze firing, to about 2100 degrees Fahrenheit which fuses the glaze into the clay and makes a completely solid and durable finished piece.
